About Us

Mission Statement:

To provide a warm, loving, Christ-centered environment that will meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of single women and their children in order to equip and empower them to independently establish a stable, secure home upon successful completion of the program.

The Sophie House networks with investors and landlords who provide quality housing for the participants in our program. We also provide supportive services for women as well as their children. The supportive services include, but are not limited to, case management, counseling, financial planning and budgeting, tutoring, Bible study, educational seminars, and enrichment programs for both women and children.  We also offer at the Community Center facility, a Food Pantry, Clothes Closet and Benevolence Ministry in partnership with Mount Vernon Baptist Church.

The Sophie House is an educational and supportive organization serving the greater Richmond area.

Staff:

Founder and Executive Director:

Kimberly Braine-Tillem is the Founder and Executive Director of The Sophie House. She graduated from Virginia Tech in 1993 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Family and Child Development. Kimberly received her Master’s Degree in Human Services-Marriage and Family Therapy from Liberty University in May of 2010. The Lord gave her the vision for The Sophie House 8 years ago when she experienced the challenges of single motherhood. Kimberly was a preschool and enrichment teacher for 15 years. Before starting The Sophie House, Kimberly worked for 2 years as a radio show host for the Sonrise Morning Show on American Family Radio, 89.7 FM and also sold underwriting for the nonprofit Christian radio station. Kimberly has been serving as the full time minister for Children and Families at Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Glen Allen, since September of 2011. Kimberly’s passions are helping women and children reach their fullest potential, teaching others about the healing and redemptive power of Jesus Christ and networking and fundraising for God’s Kingdom in order to accomplish His will!

 

Director of Operations and Programming:

Rebecca Blackwell

Rebecca Blackwell joined the staff at The Sophie House in June 2014. She has been married to a wonderful man, Mark, for 18 years and they have 3 terrific children.  Rebecca and her family are members at Mount Vernon Baptist Church where she and her husband are involved in the marriage ministry, while their children thrive in the student ministry.  Prior to coming to The Sophie House, Rebecca had a great deal of experience working with another non-profit  teaching relationship skills, event planning, and coalition leadership.  She hopes to bring some of these classes to our clients at The Sophie House and the community too.  She has a passion for families and a heart for spreading the love of Christ to others. Rebecca is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University with a BS in Business Administration and Management and prior to starting a family had a career in banking, staffing, cosmetology, and sales management.
